Dear Gentle Reader,

My greatest wish for you and your people, for the world in fact, is that we include death in our understanding of life. Often I hear death being proclaimed some sort of enemy and I understand how that can be: that which we love is suddenly not what it was and it hurts terribly. Having very recently and very suddenly lost my mother (where did she go?), I understand in ways I wish I didn’t, but I don’t get to choose that understanding or the life journey that made it so. Being close to death means being within whispering distance to Mystery.

We do this life thing together, we ride together through the changing vistas, emotions and roles and again, my greatest wish is that we also die together. Not in a sterile room devoid of love, but with my Aunt Sandra’s chocolate cake downstairs to fortify the caregivers as one of us breathes their last…with a best friend’s loving touch and the smell of lavender essential oil, with someone’s father reading their favorite story, with LOVE sweet love mixed in with comfort and sadness and intimacy.

My second greatest wish for you is beyond what anyone could understand, certainly myself included: may death be the portal into something even more amazing than this earthly life. May we emerge from these heavy cocoons grateful for the lessons and complete in what we’ve always been, whatever that might be. I don’t know. I don’t know much of anything and for the first time in this life that feels just right. I do know that I will be of service in whatever way I can when it’s time, yours and mine.
